The internet is so full of terrible information and AMAZING pictures. Both of those things equate to a tremendous loss of time in my day. I was reading an article about food this morning and everything was going well until the author made one of those statements that sounds like it could be true but also has that sort of “made up on the spot because of my personal preference” feel to it. Think of the topics of your average Myth Busters episode or the crap that weird looking kid in Jerry Maguire is spouting off in the back seat. “A dog’s mouth is cleaner than a humans.” NO IT ISN’T! There is no data to back that statement up. If you don’t believe me, then look it up. It is antiquated, anecdotal and totally wrong. Just because dogs eat poo and don’t get sick or lick their wounds doesn’t mean they have magical saliva. Anyhow, it was such a statement that sent me spiraling off on a time wasting crusade through the inter webs.
“Did you know that a kiwi has more potassium than a banana, and has a much lower sugar content?”
I totally want that to be true. It sounds true doesn’t it? Kiwis are exotic and more expensive. Of course they are better for you. LIES! Now I could also be lying but again if you don’t believe me look it up. In fact here is a shortcut to some kiwi data and here is one for bananas. I did half of the work for you. If you need a better source than the USDA food database you are on your own. Awesome resource by the way. If you don’t have it bookmarked then you probably hate yourself and are due for diabetes of one type or another any day now. Back to the topic at hand. 100g of kiwi fruit has 312mg of potassium and 100g of banana has 358mg of potassium. Kiwi does have fewer carbohydrates but of those a greater percentage is sugar. I don’t think this is a big deal because fewer total carbs as well as 20% more fiber is a win. If you are vegetarian or, allah forbid, a vegan then every little bit of protein counts so it might encourage you to know that kiwi fruit as .05 g MORE protein than a banana. You could also eat 2 peanuts to make up that difference.(unvalidated fact)
Long story short kiwi fruit is a great alternative to bananas because they do have a crap ton of potassium, lower glycemic index, more fiber, fewer total carbohydrates/ gram, and a smidgeon more protein. If sugars are a problem, and I know very few folks for whom they are not, this could be one more tool in your belt to adequate nutrition without excessive calorie, specifically carbohydrate, consumption.
The picture above is just evidence of the time sucking beast that the internet is. I wanted a picture of a dog licking another dogs butt to go with this post, which I found in spades by the way, but I found this gem instead and it made me laugh so hard I couldn’t pass it up.
